Taking a ride on the wild side...

From hanging out (as a lurker) on r/pourover on Reddit, I had heard a lot about Perc coffee. Located in Georgia, they seem to focus on producing what they call “wild” coffees (read: novel processing techniques to create interesting taste profiles). Wanting to be a bit more adventurous with my coffee selection, I found the “wildest” one that fit in my budget. Which happened to be “Colombia Andrés Martínez Floral Caturra.” It helped that all of the flavor notes spoke to me as well (citric flavors, yes please!) Now, these brews introduced 2 novel things for me:

  1. I had never explored the caturra variety (at least that I am aware of; I don’t usually go for Colombians, where it is popular). According to the Perc site, it is “a high-yielding Bourbon mutation known for having a lush sweetness and perfect balance.” Sounds good to me!
  2. This was also my first chance to test out my wife’s Valentine’s gift to me; the Origami Air S. Always great to have someone who supports your hobbies in your life!

From the first cup, I was hooked. Both on the flavor notes I was getting and the new brewer. The orange was super stong; very juicy and acidic, but still like I was brewing a tea. I also tried Aeropress and V60. The V60 was noticeably “lighter” in body compared to the others, and I enjoyed the tea-like body, but it lacked a lot of the citric notes I was getting with the Origami (more extraction?). The Aeropress was decent, but the notes all seemed a tad muted; definitely not as good for me. Perhaps a bit sweeter, though, which is intriguing. I think if I could’ve pushed the sweetness a tad more with the Origami to round out the acidic cup, it would be possibly my favorite roast. Maybe I need take a look at more caturra varieties in my future?
