Onyx Coffee - Framily and Krampus
Company: Onyx Coffee Lab
I ordered 2 coffees at the same time again...
Overall Rating : 3.5 ⭐
So, I started this blog with something that is actually quite rare for me; ordering coffee as a package deal! Usually, I am one to take a particular coffee and really take my time with it on its own. Plus, with just me drinking it (my wife hates coffee 🥺), it usually lasts awhile. But, I figured at just 10 ounces each, and it being seasonal, these bags were compelling enough together to give it a go. The holidays only come once after all…
Let’s start with the disappointment and save the best for last; I did not really enjoy Framily. And I had high hopes when the site was talking about “earl grey,” “berries,” and even “grilled peach.” But, in my experience with them, they (the beans) just had a muted flavor profile, especially after the first couple of brews. Being on the lighter side, I tried grinding finer and using light temperatures. I tried a rotation of brewing methods. I even attempted the recommended brew on their site. But it all did nothing for me. The website did mention an Origami brewer. Perhaps that was the issue? Do I really need another pourover device?! It does look gorgeous… 😂
As for Krampus, it was a totally different story! My first cup (brewed using my favored V60) tasted great! It had a great body (thick and somewhat syrupy) and was expressing a nice finish with cherry flavoring. I was enjoying this one no matter what, but then I broke out a tool that had been collecting dust in my kitchen for awhile; the Aeropress. I had not been able to develop a tried and true recipe with this brewer, but for some reason (aka internet rabbit hole; thanks algorithm!), I felt compelled. And man, the results blew me away! I was getting more fruit flavors mixed with a ton of chocolate notes in a nice, sweet finish. All while retaining the same full body and pleasant mouthfeel. Thanks for this one Youtube.

Stats tracked:
- Framily bag:
- Best Method: V60
- Key notes: minimal, orange?!
- Overall rating: 2
- Krampus:
- Best Method: Inverted Aeropress
- Key notes: molasses, syrup, cherry
- Overall rating: 5.0
As you can see, it averages to about 3.5! I think Onyx knocked Krampus out of the park (wish it were a year round offering), but fell flat with Framily. But perhaps I was not the intended audience…
